We know there is urgency for exploring online tools and virtual practices for professional learning and development teams because of the pandemic. Nevertheless, it becomes quite a challenge to keep your audience engaged because you do not have the traditional classroom face-to-face interactions. Several practices will help you keep your audience engaged in a virtual classroom. You might feel like these small practices like dividing the course into smaller chunks, asking questions, or requiring instructive feedback is not important because these things are too small to consider.

However, it must be kept in mind that these small practices keep the participants engaged by ensuring the interactive nature of virtual learning courses and sessions. Here, we list the nine most important building blocks that make virtual training effective. However, if you want to engage your employees in a virtual training program, it is mandatory for you to have a virtual training platform. If you do not have a virtual training platform, you must get one. Once you have the platform and the course, you can move on to these nine most effective virtual training practices. So, let us get going:

1.    You Must Define How Often You Want To Communicate

Remember the timetable system that everyone followed in school? That is effective to date. A timetable is an expectation provided to the participants explaining how often they might hear from you. Of course, nobody can be made available at the last minute. Thus, you must take care of three specific things:

  1. How frequent will the interaction be?
  2. The purpose of the communication channel that you use
  3. How might the participants get in touch with you?

Always ensure that the participants should always have a heads-up on when to be available. Their availability for the training will always be in light of the criticality of the training topics.

2.    Establish Clear Goals For Your Training

The effectiveness of a training session highly depends on the targets that are assigned to this training. If training has no goals to achieve, it will not be effective. Thus, setting clear goals for the training is a necessity from beginning to end. You must know the following:

  1. Does the goal require increased engagement?
  2. Do you want to see increased performance, sales, service retention – what are you measuring?
  3. Is your goal better knowledge retention?

Once your objectives are clear, you must get them together to establish a unique goal and communicate that with your audience.

3.    Customize The Training Program For The Team

To achieve this, you will have to create a unique module for each participant, keeping their needs in view. That’s not it. You can design a universal module and provide everybody with an option to customize the theme. According to their needs, the instruction delivery methods like audio, video, whatever they prefer, allow the participants to chart their own learning pathway, explore their own journey and choose relevant activities that are spot on for them. The content, nevertheless, remains the same for all.

4.    Making Training Interactive And Enjoyable Is Crucial

To capture and retain audience engagement, it is crucial to ensure that the training program is interactive and enjoyable. It does not mean that you can include ‘fun for fun sake’ in your training program. It means that you should use audio, visuals, quizzes, roleplays, training games, Q&A, presentations, interesting facts, etc., which align with your final objective of the training.

5.    Always Allow The Participants To Request A Demo

When you are thinking about designing a training program for your team, employees, or any participant, it must be kept in mind that they might have had attended a similar training before. Thus, to save their time, you should always provide an option of requesting a demo or a pre-enrolment pathway to your participants. In this way, they will know what they are signing up for. And, for those who do sign-up you’ll know that your program is exactly right for them.

6.    Always Make Sure That The Virtual Training Is Accessible On Mobile

It is extremely important, and we mean it when we say it. We live in a world where we want every piece of information in the palm of our hands. So, if you are designing a training module, you must ensure that the training platform that you have chosen must support the mobile interface. It will allow the participants to join the virtual training and access the information later whenever they want.

7.    Ensure The Workability Of The Training Platform

You do not want to see your whole training plan going down as soon as you launch it. That is why you should always ensure the workability of your training platform. The first step in this is to have a demo of the training platform and see if it offers the desired result. If it does, you must get it through several test launches before you finally launch it.  Whether it is Zoom, WebEx, Teams, Skype, or any other platform, make sure that you test, test, test, then launch.

8.    Apply Training Activities And Assess The Effectiveness

There are several training activities that you can conduct after definite intervals to ensure that the participants are engaged. The best part of having these activities incorporated is to measure how effective your training program is by assessing these activities. For example, you ask the participants to give a quick assessment. When you get the results, you will know how your participants are tracking.  Remember that knowledge, doesn’t mean application.  Therefore, learning application should also be measured, after the course has finished.

9.    Always Ask For Feedback And Survey The Participants

It would be most advantageous if you designed the training module to keep collecting instructive and informational feedback throughout the training session. It will allow you to improve and enhance the next session according to the needs of the participant. Furthermore, you should also conduct a post-course measure at the end of the training session to gauge its effectiveness, when compared to your pre-course measure.

Conclusion

Now that you are aware of all the critical practices that you must follow to ensure the virtual training’s effectiveness, you might go ahead and work on the areas in which your employees might require training.
